Tempaku Ku

Tempaku-ku (sometimes also written as Tenpaku-ku) is located on the outskirts of Nagoya and offers excellent access to Toyota by train. Up until recently, the number of foreign residents living in the area was rather low and thus it has few facilities catering to the foreign community. Recently popularity of the Hara and Hirabari areas is increasing due to the cheaper housing prices available, though expat housing is limited as large houses and apartments with more than five bedrooms are hard to find.

Transport

Located halfway between downtown Nagoya and Toyota City, this ward has good access to both locations by train, and is served by two of Nagoya’s subway lines: the Tsurumai line that is good for transferring to Toyota in the east and travels to Kami-Otai via the city centre in the north; and the Sakura-dori line, which is convenient for traveling to Nagoya Station.

From Tempaku-ku the Nagoya IC and Meinikan Expressway are quite convenient for drivers.

Parks and green spaces

There are plenty of lovely open green areas in Tempaku-ku, with the Tenpaku and Ueda rivers being particularly pleasant in the springtime as the cherry blossoms bloom.

However, it is Tenpaku Park (Tenpaku Koen) that is the most prominent space at which to enjoy the nice weather. As well as a large children’s park with a slide, swings and climbing frames there is also an open BBQ area with brick and metal barbecue pits, which draws a large number of visitors especially on weekends and national holidays. A reservation is necessary and there is a small fee for the BBQ area, but the park itself is free to access.

Shopping

There are two Piago supermarkets in Tempaku-ku, one in Ueda and one in Hirabari, as well as a Feel RISE supermarket near Ueda station. Near Hara station there is a Maxvalu supermarket and the upscale Matsuzakaya that has a wide range of foreign goods available.

Dining

In keeping with the general feel for the area there are not many western style restaurants in Tempaku-ku, but this being Japan there are still plenty of smaller eateries that cater for all kinds of Japanese cuisines, from ‘yakiniku’ to sushi to ‘yakitori’. Discovering your favorite one is all part of the experience.

Nightlife

Getting to Nagoya’s party area of Sakae is relatively straightforward, as the Sakura-dori subway stops at Hisaya-odori station, a short walk from Sakae. For a more laid-back evening is nearby Yagoto (also on the Sakura-dori line), which is where many of the city’s students spend their weekends in restaurants and bars.

Items of cultural significance and local attractions

For those who enjoy a round of golf, the nearby Aichy Country Club is considered to be of pretty high quality,with some pretty tough holes, although the staff’s English ability doesn’t quite match up with the course’s overall high standards.

The Nagoya Agricultural Center is just 20 minutes from Hirabari station and features glasshouses and a model farm with livestock. The centre has a cafe and shops that sell organic vegetables and health foods and plants. The grounds are also used by locals for picnics, particularly during the plum and cherry blossom season in spring.

The Aichi Driving Test Center is located at Hirabari, which will be of great importance for those wishing to convert their international drivers license.

Schools

Nagoya International School is about half an hour away from Hirabari by car, but public transport is a bit more complicated, taking over an hour. Aichi International School is much more convenient, being just a fifteen minutes drive or 30 minutes by bus.

Those with younger children will be relieved to hear that the Ueda International Preschool is located in Tempaku-ku, and enjoys an excellent reputation amongst the foreign community.
